NSW Tree Works recently completed a challenging tree removal in Galston, removing three large dead trees from an acreage property on Galston Road. The job involved two dead Radiata Pines and one dead gum tree, with trees reaching approximately 30 metres in height. Due to their size, condition, nearby powerlines and restricted working environment, a 90-tonne crane was used to safely dismantle and remove the trees.
Why These Dead Trees Needed Removal
The three trees were completely dead and had become increasingly difficult to manage safely. Dead trees can present a higher removal risk because branches and sections of canopy may become brittle and unpredictable during dismantling.
One of the dead Radiata Pines was positioned close to the front boundary of the property, with powerlines directly beneath the tree. The large size of the trees, combined with the dead canopy and surrounding site constraints, meant a conventional tree removal approach would have created unnecessary risk.
During the removal process, extensive internal deterioration was also found within one of the dead pines. The heartwood had significantly decayed and showed evidence of termite activity and mud within the stem, making the timber difficult to process and requiring frequent chainsaw sharpening.

Why a 90-Tonne Crane Was Used
Our crew selected a 90-tonne mobile crane to provide the reach and lifting capacity required for the job. The crane allowed us to secure and remove large sections of the dead trees in a controlled manner. We could then move each section directly into the processing area without lowering it through the surrounding property.
Some crane picks weighed approximately four tonnes. This demonstrates the size and weight of the timber involved. The crane also reduced uncontrolled movement within the dead canopy. This allowed the climbing arborist and ground crew to work more efficiently and safely.

The crew arrived on site from approximately 7:00 am, with the 90-tonne crane arriving at around 7:30 am. Careful sequencing was required before the crane could be set up, as the driveway would become blocked once the crane was positioned.
All essential equipment, including the two trucks, 18-inch wood chipper, articulated loader and other machinery, was moved into position before crane setup commenced.
We also advised the client to move any vehicles they might need before the crane setup began
Crane setup took approximately one hour, including positioning and establishing the outriggers before lifting operations began.

The job required a coordinated specialist crew, including a climbing arborist, crane operator, licensed dogger, crane assistant and a three-person ground crew.
Equipment on site included two trucks, an 18-inch wood chipper, an articulated loader fitted with a log grab, and professional chainsaws including a STIHL MS 880 with a 36-inch bar for processing the largest timber.
The articulated loader was particularly useful for moving heavy timber around the acreage property while helping to minimise unnecessary damage to the lawn and surrounding terrain.
The combination of specialist personnel and purpose-built equipment allowed the large dead trees to be dismantled, processed and managed efficiently throughout the day.

Stump Grinding and Site Clean-Up
After removing the three dead trees, stumps were ground, all three new stumps. At the client’s request, we also ground one additional old stump.
The client chose to keep the mulch on site for reuse. They also kept the larger logs for future firewood. This reduced disposal and transport costs.
The clean-up required extra effort because the dead trees produced a large volume of brittle branches, twigs and heavy timber. Our crew completed the entire project within one day, with no property damage.
